England’s Late Preseason winners & losers

The Premier League kicks off on Friday, so with renewed interest in the national team who’s going into the new season on a high…

Phil Foden

We can all stop praying for Jack Wilshere’s glass ankle, hurrah! Foden was outstanding as City claimed the Community Shield with a comfortable win over Chelsea. Foden looks a natural fit in Guardiola’s free-flowing City side and was on hand to set up the opener for Sergio Aguero. With Mahrez, De Bruyne and both Silva’s for competition it remains to be seen how much football Foden will play this season, but on this form he’s in the team and will take some shifting.

We should remember he’s only 18 and yesterday was only his eleventh game in senior football, but Foden is exactly the type of player England lack and it he can stay fit is a Euro 2020 starter in the making, and Jack can get injured all he likes!

Joe Hart

Did anyone see this coming? After a dismal year with West Ham, Hart suddenly finds himself first choice ‘keeper for a side playing European competition and if he can find form, keep not one but two of his principle England rivals out of the first team!

Hart still needs to prove he can overcome the mistakes and regain his 2011-12 form but with Nick Pope & Tom Heaton both injured he has the chance to establish himself at Burnley and get back in the England squad.

Ben Gibson

Another career thrown a lifeline from Turf Moor! 14 months ago Gibson was in the England squad whilst Harry Maguire was facing the possibility of life in the Championship. Now back in the Premier League with Burnley he’s not likely to displace Maguire, but Gibson can make up for lost time if he can push Ben Mee out of Burnley’s first team. Back on the radar!

Alfie Mawson

Got the transfer he needed after suffering relegation with Swansea. Mawson should go straight into Fulham’s first 11 following his £20million transfer. The Cottagers look a solid bet to stay clear of the drop zone and in Slavisa Jokanovic, Mawson has found an excellent manager. Suffering a relegation isn’t terminal to an international career as Maguire has already proved but going down twice makes you Curtis Davies- Mr Mawson you have been warned!

Jack Butland

How not to get a transfer to a top 6 club? Let in a howler on live TV! Butland wasn’t helped by a lackadaisical Stoke defence getting run ragged by Leeds, but his error for Leeds’ second was truly awful. With Stoke looking a long way short of their advertised promotion favourites tag Butland must hope Thibaut Courtois gets his move to Madrid, triggering a game of goalkeeping musical chairs.

Danny Rose

Unwanted at Tottenham and Ed Woodward appears to have lost his agents number. With rivals securing a Premier League start it’s not looking good for Rose, now would be a good time to get back into Pochettino’s good books.
