Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs) 01:20, 16 July 2023‎ (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. I found this image on Flickr that was listed as public domain by the uploader. I've noticed that other public domain images have been uploaded on here from flickr and I think I screwed up during the upload process. How I set this image to public domain on here so that it wont get deleted or have I messed up the upload for this image completely?

--LostplanetKD73 (talk) 21:37, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Flickr source has Public Domain Mark 1.0 on it, which would accept if the flickr user is the photographer. This looks like a historic photograph though so determining whether it actually is public domain is trickier. Abzeronow (talk) 21:47, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@LostplanetKD73: I'd say there is absolutely no way to know the copyright status of that unless the account owner of the Flickr account is more forthcoming about why they believe that to be public domain. Their page gives no provenance for the photo. Unless we know more, we probably have to delete it. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This file looks like an upscaled version of the image at railarchive, which looks like a well documented website. The non-free textual description is the same and it is probably the work of the railarchive website. It describes the photo as a builders photo, i.e. taken for the company after the locomotive is completed. This would then be a 1929 photo, probably anonymous. The flickr account should probably be avoided. It copies works from various publications and tags everything public domain although it is clear that many images are not in the public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:42, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok thanks for the information. So I guess the bast course of action is just to wait and see what happens in the next few days since this image may not really be 100% in the public domain for at least another 5-6 years. I'll try to ascertain more info from an uploader in the future if I ever come across anymore old locomotive images that claim to be in public domain. LostplanetKD73 (talk) 04:58, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@LostplanetKD73 if it was published in the U.S. in 1929, then it will definitely be in the public domain January 1, 1925. More likely, copyright was not renewed and it is already PD. - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok so for future reference if the image is taken before 1925 it technically counts as public domain? LostplanetKD73 (talk) 17:10, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Published before 1928 or taken before 1903 and unpublished until after 2002. If a pre-1978 photograph (even very old ones) were published from 1978 to 2002, they wouldn't be public domain until at least 2048, see COM:Hirtle. Yes, U.S. copyright is complicated. Abzeronow (talk) 17:15, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Abzeronow: Lobbyists want it so, and congresscritters comply.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:29, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, Congress hasn't exactly made it more simple. In just over 1 month, U.S. copyright will expire for 1928 published works (except sound recordings), 1923 sound recordings, unpublished works of authors who died in 1953 and unpublished works with unknown authors created in 1903. Copyright help regarding File:Rag Mayur.jpg[edit]

I tried uploading the pic, which was published in a news paper, I have mentioned it clearly. If you think if it is not appropriate you can delete it or you can guide me. Thank you.

--Herodyswaroop (talk) 08:48, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Herodyswaroop, hello! Rule of thumb: almost all pics you find online are under some sort of copyright and you can't upload them to Commons. If you check the link you gave it says "Copyright - newindianexpress.com 2023. All rights reserved." Case closed. This pic will get deleted fairly soon, you don't have to do anything.
You can upload a pic of Rag Mayur if you took it yourself with your own camera, and so can other people. Including him. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:39, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General question about deleting or moving files[edit]

Can I move files? How do I delete something? Just new here & wanted to know about deleting files? Can I use tools for it? I want to also focus on colorizing images. How? —The Industrial Me 1563 (talk) 21:30, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@The Industrial Me 1563: Hi,
Only people with the file mover right can move files. Please use the {{Rename}} template.
Only admins can delete files. Please create a deletion request after having read COM:DR. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:43, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Album Art[edit]

I am making wiki pages for bands, and I want to upload an image of the album art? Is this allowed? Metalbro (talk) 11:10, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Metalbro: On Commons, all files must be under a free license or in the public domain, so you are not allowed to upload album covers unless you have a formal written permission from the copyright holder. On some language Wikipedias (notably English), these can be uploaded under a fair use rationale. Yann (talk) 11:20, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Metalbro In short, on en-WP, you can upload a non-free album-cover in an article about the album, not an article about the band. en:Stay Hungry (album) etc. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:40, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How would I go about writing a script that affects video?[edit]

Hi, I'm still fairly new to Wikimedia commons, so let me know if this question should be moved to a better place, like a place for discussing scripts and stuff.

How would i go about writing a script that affects the video that appears when you click on a video to play it? Like make it so the time display at the bottom left corner also shows the milliseconds? insne (talk) 23:16, 29 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Insnesnakos: This is a fine place to ask your question, but you might want to go to Commons:Village pump/Technical in future. A script to affect video playback sounds like something you could put in your common.js page, or put in another JavaScript subpage of your user page and then load at common.js if you think you might want to share it with other people. I'm not super experienced with JavaScript, but User:CalendulaAsteraceae/common.js does have some code that adds a link to the toolbar, and my JS page at Wikisource (s:en:User:CalendulaAsteraceae/common.js) has some more complicated code, including code that loads someone else's script. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 03:42, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image file size limit on initial upload different from the limit on photo update[edit]

Hey, I uploaded a photograph to Wikimedia which is larger than 100MB, and then when trying to send an updated version, I got blocked by the 100MB limit. And at this point I cannot update the image or delete it -- all is left is to upload a completely new image, which is not great.

Are we aware of this discrepancy between initial upload and update?  podstawko  ●talk  18:55, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I need my images that I did not upload to Wikipedia removed.[edit]

Wikimedia has my images that I didn't upload, and I need them removed. One of your volunteers, Ser Amantio di Nicolao (talk | contribs) took photos off of my Flickr account that I have long since removed from Flickr upon request of the subject. I did not receive a message that this was occurring. The person in these images wants them off of the Internet. Can you remove them? They are a collection that includes 44753796905, 45668230991, 31795826948, 43850099670, 44753794225, 45668235631, 44753794725, 31795832538, 30726978607, 45668232681, 31795823418, 44753797315, 45668233201, 45668235631, 44753799625, and all similar images from that date and location. Thank you, Tracie Hall Tracie Hall (talk) 21:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Tracie Hall and Ser Amantio di Nicolao: as you probably know, cc-by-sa 2.0 licenses are not revocable, so what you are asking for amounts to a courtesy deletion. You are not exactly making them easy to find by giving Flickr photo IDs rather than links here on Commons to what you would like deleted, though I assume we are talking about the photos of [NAME REDACTED]. I'll do my best to set up a deletion request, but I can't guarantee finding all of the images in question. - Jmabel ! talk 22:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks again Jmabel. I didn't see you had two entries here. I didn't give the pictures those long parenthetical numbers, so thought you all did, and that if you found a few, it would find the folder for you. Because this is published, I didn't want to mention the subject's name that would bring them all up at once. After finding a page in Wikipedia on how to delete, I made requests from each photo, and then finally read the linked note at the bottom about checking the conversation and it looked like you'd already found them all. Excuse the duplication, but yes, the subjects had not given permission for me to post, and the primary subject had requested they be removed a few years ago. She has asked again that I remove all of the photos. I hadn't realized they had been taken up by Wikimedia. I will now be going through all of my Flickr pages looking for images of strangers that might not appreciate being picked up by Wikimedia and changing the permissions, or perhaps the viewers, or deleting them. I hadn't realized so many of my images had been picked up when a year or so ago I created an account and uploaded a few for your contests. Thank you for recommending they be deleted. Thanks Jmabel for creating my request. Tracie Hall (talk) 22:50, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tracie Hall: As you can imagine, setting up a separate discussion for each photo was probably not a good way to do this. I would like to close all of those nominations as being superseded by the one central discussion (which is going to be tedious to execute, but not nearly as tedious as carrying on 40 or so separate discussions). I will give at least 3 hours for Tracie or anyone else to object to that; I realize I am going "out of process" here. - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Starting the cleanup. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cleanup done. My apologies if I may have slightly messed up an edit summary or two in this process: I was trying to go quickly through this. I believe everything is now acceptable in terms of the files, and that there is now a single place for this discussion: Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Los Angeles Harbor College. Jmabel ! talk 03:55, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Apologies, I thought I was helping you find each one, but apparently I made it worse. Apparently your database system is completely different from the basic library databases I've worked with, combined with, perhaps, a different organization that involves needing multiple people to agree on the removal action.
I'm afraid I really have no understanding of how things work there, so this question is likely to be irritating as well, but am I right that all of the work you've done, so far, was to remove my individual requests, so as to be able to revert to this initial request and get the files into a group where one decision could be made for the entire "folder" of pictures (speaking in Google Drive terms, probably not yours)? So, we're at a recommended stage now? (Perhaps where we would have been before I was "helpful") Where the next stage would be multiple people decide whether to agree on the courtesy deletions? Tracie Hall (talk) 16:11, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tracie Hall: Hi, Deletion requests are usually closed after a week. There is no opposition to your request so far, so I expect it to be closed next week. Yann (talk) 16:18, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the estimation!!! Apologies for my ignorance when loading those to Flickr. I had taken the photos for the young lady in question, but should have just handed her a card with all of the photos on it, rather than posting them. I didn't realize at the time that, first, she would later wish they were not on the Internet, or 2nd that an external entity might collect them. I wasn't aware of the existence of Wikimedia at the time, but I do think it's a wonderful service, and I appreciate that any of my images were deemed worthy of it. Tracie Hall (talk) 16:43, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tracie Hall: these have all now been deleted. There was a clear consensus to do so, and some danger of the Streisand effect, so I saw no point to leaving it open for a week. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tracie Hall: FWIW, administrators on Commons have certain technical capabilities that other users don't have, but for the most part we are simply empowered to honestly carry out community decisions, not to make potentially controversial decisions ourselves. While there is a clear, standing community consensus to delete (for example) copyright violations, courtesy deletions of anything that is more than a week old is always subject to some discussion. Someone might say, "hey, that's legally licensed, and I'm using it in such-and-such place," and that is going to win out over granting a courtesy. Also, to be honest, when people claim (falsely) that they have a legal right to revoke a license they granted, someone else is likely to turn it into a matter of principle and stand by keeping the image so that we don't end up with a bad precedent of being bullied. In this case, it looks like there were no such issues, and that's great. - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
THANK YOU tremendously. Well, lesson learned! I hope I didn't traumatize Ser Amantio di Nicolao.
I don't see anything else in my files here likely to cause anyone panic, so no worries that you'll have to decline any future requests. I am going through my Flickr stream to prevent future issues. I don't consider myself a good portrait photographer so there are very few, but still worth the time to go through and delete. I get it that if they've been picked up by anyone already they had my permission- I just want to prevent future pickups of anything I might regret having shared for any reason. In general, I love sharing my pictures so will only be changing permissions on the rare image that I don't want to delete, but don't want used.
Thanks again to all involved.
Best,
Tracie Tracie Hall (talk) 18:45, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading a new version of an image[edit]

Hi - I'm a long-time Commons user with 314 edits. I've been uploading new versions of images (generally cropping and changing levels) of other uploaders' files for years, but recently my new version uploads have been blocked with "File overwriting not allowed" because I "do not have sufficient permissions to do this."

Has something changed? Lestocq (talk) 14:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lestocq: Hi. You have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/290 by trying to overwrite files that you did not originally upload. Please read MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-file-overwriting and Commons:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2023/08#Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights again. Please request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jeff G. Thanks for that. It seems odd that clicking the "Upload a new version of this file" button which is available on file pages is rated as Abuse. It hadn't happened to me before last month. And I'm confused by the term "overwriting" - I'm trying to add a new, revertable, version of a file, not overwrite it. Lestocq (talk) 17:10, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Overwriting is essentially a new version of the file under the same name. Since too many people were ignoring the overwriting guidelines, it was changed so only people with the autopatrol right (and those who have rights that include autopatrol) can overwrite other people's files. You can make a request to overwrite a specific file at COM:OWR Abzeronow (talk) 17:16, 1 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Track usage of all my uploaded files[edit]

I know there is this answer in the FAQ about a single file, but how can I track usage of multiple files (all my files)? Thank you for this reply. I had heard of Glamorous but assumed it had something to do with museums and such. So, I gave it a whirl and learned that I had 11,000 pix uploaded, slightly more than my estimate. 6,000 are in use which is a 'way bigger percentage than I expected. Copyright status regarding U.S. Ambassador's Photos on Twitter[edit]

Hello, I am wondering whether these photographs by David L. Cohen, American Ambassador to Canada would qualify under a work of a United States Department of State employee, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain per 17 U.S.C. § 101 and § 105 and the Department Copyright Information. Other photographs on the consulate's Flickr are already on Wikipedia, but them being on Twitter (and me not finding any photos from the consulate's Twitter yet) complicates matters. I would lean towards yes, since this is taken as part of that person's official duties, but I am unsure. Ornithoptera (talk) 04:17, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

These photos are almost certainly not by Cohen, though they are on his Twitter feed. The question seems to be whether we can presume them to be the work of an official U.S. government photographer. - Jmabel ! talk 05:26, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oops, I meant posted by. Semantics aside, I would assume that it would be "made as part of that person's official duties" right? This is a diplomatic visit between Cohen and Wab Kinew. Ornithoptera (talk) 05:56, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Those photos do appear from the context to be part of Cohen's diplomatic visit so I'd also lean towards those being taken by diplomatic staff as part of their official duties. Abzeronow (talk) 16:48, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the response! I'll try and upload some of the photographs there then, they cover some figures that don't have photographs on Wiki yet so this might be fruitful! Ornithoptera (talk) 00:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I want to publish my gathered statistics and try to make a convention for wikipedians, so there will be no random colourization. For example, compare File:Flag of Chiatura Municipality.svg and File:Flag of Vani Municipality.svg – these must have identical colours for azure, vert and gold. Also I need to notice, that colour codes for different tinctures have their differences and special aspects in every country, so I don't think this is good idea to take colours directly from some, e.g. German land's flag. Plaga med (talk) 14:44, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Plaga med: In short, in a controversial area, you are trying to impose your view as policy, and consensus be damned. That's not how this works. - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's not that I want to impose only my view, I don't see any conflict with the principle of consensus. Somebody must start to talk, to have a consensus. Some things can be strinct rules if there are RS, if there is not, we can just have some list of recomendations. So if I'll try to unify colours of those flags and Coats of Arms, there will be a central place to discuss changes.
It is my main idea – to have a single place to discuss such topic and to write down my argumentation for my edits. Plaga med (talk) 08:44, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Plaga med: Ah, sorry, this read as if you were trying to impose your view, rather than start discussion there. Are you at all involved with en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology or Commons:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology? I'm not sure how active they are, but even if they are moribund, reactivating them would probably be the best way to do this.
Do keep in mind, though, that on the same principle we apply to maps, we are very unlikely to say to anyone "you can't upload your version." We might be able to mark it with {{Fact disputed}} or something more specific; we might allow a process whereby a WikiProject could actually endorse some coats of arms and deprecate others; but it will almost certainly be a matter of templates, etc., not of deleting things that the main group thinks are inaccurate. - Jmabel ! talk 19:49, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I'll leave my question there! Plaga med (talk) 22:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright issue in very old familiy pictures[edit]

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civitanova_del_Sannio#Monumenti_e_luoghi_d'interesse

Hello! I recently modified some text and uploaded some pics about old personalities from my little city. They are personalities died about 100 years ago, i found their old family pictures around the web.

I just received an alert from wikipedia about copiright issues.

PIcs are not mine but neither from the websites they published. They are just very old pictures without owner.

What can i do to solve?

Thanks, Mauro Mauro Lisanti (talk) 15:11, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mauro Lisanti: Hi,
It depends how old are these pictures. Pictures older than 120 years are OK whatever the country of origin (so from before 1904 next month). For Italian pictures, they are in the public domain in Italy 20 years after creation (see {{PD-Italy}}), and public domain in USA if before 1976. You need to indicate the date. Yann (talk) 16:40, 2 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Which can be an approximate date, if you state it confidently. E.g. {{other date|before|1930}} which shows as "before 1930
date QS:P,+1930-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1326,+1930-00-00T00:00:00Z/9
", or {{other date|between|1900|1940}} which shows as "between 1900 and 1940
date QS:P,+1950-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1319,+1900-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1326,+1940-00-00T00:00:00Z/9

@Subhamsr24: Most images on the internet are not free. If you can't find the image license, then it's probably copyrighted. 20 upper 07:38, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@20 upper, @Subhamsr24, What we are interested in is the onward licence. An item which is copyright may also be licenced for onward use. It is the lack of onward licence that dictates whether it is legitimate to upload the file here. If that licence is not present or is not obvious then there is no permission (licence) for onward use. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:33, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question. Need advice[edit]

there are some letters I have obtained from some press members. which has very historical value and importance. I was thinking to put them on commons to publish. which was also about same personality I wrote an article about but I'm not sure if it's acceptable SaneFlint (talk) 10:21, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Letter is from 1923. SaneFlint (talk) 10:26, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint While the letter is 100 years old, I think, though I am no expert on copyright matters, that giving you correct correct advice will require the country in which the letters were written, and the (approximate) date of death of the writer, since the writer is, generally, the copyright owner. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 10:42, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfect ill do that. Thanks SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
100 years is not actually quite enough to be safe. In most countries, death date of author will matter. For example, 70 years after the author's death is a common (but by no means universal) threshold. Someone can easily have written something in 1923 and lived into the 1990s.
Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi it is known as Qasida which was recited on a historical conference which took place over 100 year ago. I have taken picture of that letter. Just curious how do i make it work. AS PICTURE WILL BE TAKEN BY ME SO I THINK there wont be any copy right issue. And i have details about a person who wrote this in 1923./1342H . HOPE IT HELPS SaneFlint (talk) 15:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint That the picture is taken by you is not material if the item you have photographed is under copyright. The advice about the death date of the author of the letter is important, perhaps vital. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:27, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How we can know the material is under copy right already? Or there will be as i will be posting SaneFlint (talk) 15:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SaneFlint It may be allowed on enWiki to upload the letter under the doctrine of "Fair Use" which is not available on Commons. That is a separate conversation to be had, probably on w:en:WP:TEAHOUSE.
You will be able to research the copyright status from the answer given to you by Jmabel, above. Most of this information is pretty easy to find online (including Commons' pages on various countries' copyright laws). Commons:Copyright rules by territory is the key place to start. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 15:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think I was able to upload it. Thank you. I'll follow up that link to learn more about copy right stuffs:) SaneFlint (talk) 15:46, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi the person who wrote the Qasida died earlier in 1923.[ few weeks earlier] Than the Conference happened..
letter / Qasida was presented by Abdul Khaliq Kandyarwi, close aide of Maulana Muhammad from Sind. SaneFlint (talk) 16:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That leads me to a technical question. I have determined from that information that the files are {{PD-Pakistan}}. Should an upload of photographs of the PD document also have a licence for the photograph itself, or is the PD sufficient. @Jmabel Is this something you are familiar with, please? If not please will you point me to the correct place to ask the question? 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 19:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Certainly a faithful photograph of a PD photo creates no new copyright. Presumably the shadow of the photographer's hand is accidental, but I suppose in theory it could be copyrightable. I gather from the initial upload that they were claiming a copyright and offering a license, and it's probably cleaner if we acknowledge that, and indicate that the photo might have (licensed) rights independent of the document. The source should then be given as "original document photographed by [whatever credit might be desired]."
There are a lot of ways to do a split credit + split licensing like this. I know what I did at File:Asahel Curtis panoramic view of Galbraith, Bacon & Co Wall Street Dock and warehouse, Seattle, with sailing ships in background.jpeg is considered acceptable; I think there may be a template to do this more cleanly. - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel Thank you. I will set to work on that 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel following your advice I have done what I believe makes sense. If you (or anyone) feels I am incorrect, the files are in Category:Sayyid Ihsanullah Shah Rashdi. The intention to get it right is manifestly there. My implementation of that intention differs from yours, but is reflected jn the file history tab, and I think makes both elements clear, and agrees with the uploader's wishes as expressed during the upload process.
You make an interesting point about the shadow! 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 23:43, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DONALDRSPENCER: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg image as a new user.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:59, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Корпоративные аккаунты / Corporate Accounts[edit]

Допустимы ли на Commons не личные, а корпоративные аккаунты для загрузки фотографий, принадлежащих не индивидуальным фотографам, а компаниям?

Does Commons allow creating corporate accounts for the purpose of uploading the photos being in corporate possession?

Englishrussia (talk) 05:28, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Englishrussia: There's been some disagreement about how best to do this, but as far as I know the following approach is entirely acceptable:
  • Create a separate account for each individual who will be authorized by the corporation to do this. Make the account name of the form User:NORMAL USER NAME (COMPANY NAME). (If they already have another account here, NORMAL USER NAME should match their other account.) Any account should be operated by a single person; if more than one person is involved, each should have a separate account along these same lines.
  • User should declare on the user page that this account will be used in their capacity representing that particular company.
  • Either (1) the company should post on its own website or public social media indicating that this account (or these accounts) are authorized to act on behalf of the company, and then the user pages can link to a URL that displays that authorization or (2) some representative of the company (it can be the same person, if they are in a position of authority at the company) should send email (preferably from an email account on the company domain) to the address described at COM:VRT (or COM:VRT/ru) indicating that the account is authorized, and someone at VRT can mark that on the user page once it is established to their satisfaction.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you need that translated and I can probably snag a Russian-speaker to make it clear in Russian. - Jmabel ! talk 06:40, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It's still strange, though. The Commons category is about Italy. The Wikidata infobox is about philosophers. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:53, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias: Category:Biographical-drama films of Italy is modeled on Wikidata as a category intersection, so it picked up an image from the item for a parent category's main topic. Normally that works well, but not here, because the "main topic" was bogus. - Jmabel ! talk 18:31, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure if my comment was clear or if I just don't understand how Wikidata works. What I mean is shouldn't that Commons category "Biographical-drama films of Italy" be associated with something like Wikidata:Q75611862, which seems the same topic, instead of being associated with Wikidata:Q8300509, which seems a different topic? -- Asclepias (talk) 19:01, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias: I think it should. It looks like Pi bot added the connection to Category:Biographical-drama films of Italia to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) in d:Special:Diff/1836343275. It claimed to be copying from Commons category (P373), but Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509) didn't have a Commons category (P373) before that. That seems a bit weird: maybe Mike Peel has some idea what it did. Anyway, I've fixed the problem as you suggested and the (empty) category now links to the correct item. --bjh21 (talk) 19:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There were a bunch of films with erroneous topic's main category (P910) links to Category:Biographical films about philosophers (Q8300509), it probably came through one of them (e.g., Socrates (Q3963888)), now cleaned up, e.g. [1]. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Do you happen to be able to read and write a language that not so many people know, and could translate into that language either from English or from some other major world language?

Grazie Riccardo Prosperi Riccardo Ottanta (talk) 18:35, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Riccardo Ottanta: This is the filename, as given in bold at the top of the relevant file page, e.g. "File:Pendolo di Newton a 5 sferette rallentato.webm". Depending on context, you may or may not need "File:". - Jmabel ! talk 19:40, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I need to move or copy images from Wikimedia Commons to a Wiki Page that I recently edited/expanded. The images were mine, and accepted in Wikimedia Commons.[edit]

I can find the image in Commons. I see the "use this file for wiki page". When I click on it, it just shows a pop up with file names (thumbnail or image). Nothing else happens. How do I get my own photos put into the wiki page? I tried to upload directly from my laptop to the wiki edit page and it says it's a duplicate already in existence. It won't let me advance further in the steps. Brooksy64 (talk) 20:15, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The code in the popup is what you use to insert the image (usually the thumbnail one). Just insert it in the place where you want to have that image in your article. That's the point of Commons - the files uploaded here are available in all the different language Wikipedias. --rimshottalk 20:38, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Reverting deletion nominations[edit]

Hello,

Over the past few months I have been nominating PNG files (uploaded by myself) for deletion, as they have been replaced by SVG files (also uploaded by myself). Examples of such files nominated for deletion can be found at Category:Diagrams of additional road signs of Ireland and Category:Diagrams of information road signs of Ireland. However, I've only recently become aware of the mass deletion request option. Many of my deletion nominations have not yet been acted upon, so I would like to ask if it is possible to withdraw the deletion requests I have made, and instead create a mass deletion request with all the applicable files included? Or would it be better to simply wait it out?

Thanks in advance. EthanL13 (talk) 21:08, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@EthanL13: COM:DR implies that it's OK to close deletion requests (DRs) that you opened as long as no-one has commented on them yet. The instructions for doing so are on COM:DR. Then you can open a new mass DR for the same files.
An alternative approach is to create the mass DR and then turn all the existing DRs into redirects to it. That's something I've done before for groups of DRs submitted on the same day, but I'm not sure it's appropriate when they're spread out over months. --bjh21 (talk) 22:21, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think that redirect approach would be fine, given that Ethan is the uploader (so there is no issue about notifying the uploader). Just make sure that if there have been any comments on any of these DRs they get copy-pasted to the new mass DR. - Jmabel ! talk 03:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks @Bjh21 and @Jmabel. I have created the mass DR now, hoping I have done so correctly. EthanL13 (talk) 14:16, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DEMON[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam, I hope this email finds you well. My name is Shaik Nagur Pasha, and I am a student who engages in small research projects and translates scripts into Telugu. I am reaching out to request your permission to translate an article on demons, which is currently unavailable in Telugu. This translation would greatly contribute to my education and may benefit others interested in the subject. I kindly seek your approval to translate and subsequently upload it online. Hi, is this about translating the existing Wikipedia article? Wikipedia has a page for translators, which should be a good starting point. As a first step, you should make yourself familiar with editing Wikipedia articles - in particular, that these aren't usually uploaded but edited right in Wikipedia. --rimshottalk 15:39, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, I have found an image that was published in The Boy's Own Annual, Volume 11, in 1882; I am a novice to Wikipedia, so I would like to know what you think of the image and its rights, seeing as it is 141 years old. @Fenlander88: There is a general consensus on Commons that works published more than 120 years ago can be treated as being in the public domain even if we don't know when their authors died. So you can tag the files with {{PD-old-assumed-expired}}. Alternatively, you might use {{PD-UK-unknown}} if the author can't be determined. In either case, if you're uploading using the Upload Wizard you'll need to choose "Another reason not mentioned above" and enter the corresponding template (with the curly brackets). --bjh21 (talk) 11:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Straxman12: Hi,
Unless there is a mention of a free license, which I don't see there, you have to suppose that the pictures are not acceptable for Commons. You can search for pictures under a free license on Commons, Flickr, etc. Yann (talk) 16:00, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok. Do you know where are the place where I can search for images? Straxman12 (talk) 16:21, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
btw im referring to like a link to the place where i can search Straxman12 (talk) 16:28, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Straxman12: Within a site, there is normally a search box. Beyond that, most people search with Google or Bing. Google, in particular, has some nice ways of restricting a search to a particular domain (e.g. "site:wikimedia.org" or "site:.gov", quotes not in actual search strings). If your question meant something other than that, you'll need to be clearer.
Speaking of clearer: probably 95% of what is on the Internet is neither public-domain nor free-licensed. One of the many reasons Commons is valuable is that we host about a hundred million files that are public-domain or free-licensed. Except for user-created content, these are mostly not easy to come by. - Jmabel ! talk 19:38, 8 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mislabeled and Misrepresented Photo[edit]

File:Yakan.jpg#globalusage

Hello, the photo here is listed as a photo of a "Yakan couple," with the implication in that description and in the use by the various pages that this is a couple from the Yakan tribe of people in the Philippines. However these are not Yakan people, as these are two dancers from the Filipino-American dance group I am a part of called LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble during a performance. Here is an image of the male person in the Yakan photo from 2023: second man from the left in black. Although the original Yakan photo in question was apparently taken in 2008, you can likely see they are the same person, but of course more confirmation can be provided if need be. They are both American, and are representing a Yakan couple in a performed dance in the photo. We don't necessarily need the photo to be removed from all these pages, as the representation of the Yakan culture to my understanding is fairly accurate, as it is based on research trips to the Yakan people. However we would like that the photo somehow be clarified as not of a Yakan tribesperson, but specifically a representation of Yakan people during a performance or by Filipino-Americans.

How can we go about 1) confirming that they (the two dancers indicated in this photo) are not of the Yakan tribe, and 2) editing the description on the wikimedia page and the uses on various wikipedia pages to more accurately reflect the nature of the photo, considering we are not the copyright holder and do not seem to know the original taker of the photo as indicated on the wikimedia page? Stuart Bender (born April 24, 1953), and Angelo Funicelli (born Sept 23, 1957) are a Los Angeles-based, collaborative artist team, best known for their work in video art, installation, and performance, with a heavy emphasis on the use of electronic and vocal music. They played a central role in the video art scene in the 1980s and 1990s. Their work has been exhibited widely, including at the New York and San Francisco Film Festivals, the American Film Institute, the Directors Guild of America, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, and is archived at the Getty Center in Brentwood, California. Early life, education, and meeting[edit] Bender was born in New Britain, Connecticut. His family moved to New York where he attended a number of universities, studying fine art. He received his MFA from the University of Southern California in 1993. Funicelli was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, where he studied music privately and,,for a short time, at the Manhattan School of Music. The pair met in 1975 when they were both attending Buffalo State College. From there, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they learned radio production.Relocating to Long Beach, California, in 1978, they quickly became established in the world of video art, of which the Long Beach Museum of Artwas a major international center at the time. Work[edit] Since the early 1980s, Bender and Funicelli have made videos, installations and performances that examine the nature of memory, history and identity as they are shaped by personal desires and societal pressures. Their early videos tended to be brief, darkly humorousexaminations of aspects of American culture and society, such as the grasping for fame, the cult of celebrity, and violence. Later works evolved to be more lyrical, contrapuntal ruminations on history, memory, and identity. Social activism[edit] Active in gay rights efforts since college, Bender and Funicelli helped found the first LGBT center in Albuquerque, and produced a number of gay rights radio programs, including a weekly newscast focused on issues affecting the gay community. Artworks and critical reception[edit] As MTV grew in popularity and influence in the 1980s, Bender and Funicelli started to create music videos, performances, and installations that explored the possibilities of the music video medium as a new type of experimental multimedia. Their first music video, Spider Love Lullaby(1986), was described by Helen Harrison in the New York Times as “amusing yet cautionary… in which a grotesque mother figure, half human, half graphic, croons reassuring platitudes to her anxious offspring, while contradictory visual information flashes on the screen.” Seven Prophecies (1990) was commissioned by Michael Nash, then video curator of the Long Beach Museum of Art. A seven-part work based on fragmentary prophecies spanning a millennium, it was the museum’s first interactive installation. Writing in Artweek, Robert Payne noted that, “Seven Prophecies defiantly collapses past and future, memory and augury,” while in the LA Weekly, Peter Frankcalled it a “piéce de resistance… a riveting stretch of multimedia whose scope as well as content is nothing short of operatic.” Visitations (1991) is an ambitious video-oratorio for choir and video projection, examining the role of vision and hallucination in effecting social revolution. Writing in Visions Art Quarterly, Kay Whitney describes the work as “an enormous bricolage and a Wagnerian Gesamtkunstwerk,” while John Henken in the Los Angeles Times describes the music as “deft, programmatic, historically allusive… In harmonic density, lyric grace, and formal assurance there is much for the analytical ear,” The next installation, The Earlier Known (1994) uses four channels of video and three channels of sound to sort through personal memories of events and objects. The piece was described by Cathy Curtis in the Los Angeles Times as “combatting the myth of a single-track narrative cleanly yieldinga single ‘truth’.” Created on a commission from the Santa Monica Museum of Art,the video installation Inductionemploys eleven channels of video and four channels of sound to examine notions of male identity. On selecting Induction as an Art Pick of the Week, Peter Frank described it in the LA Weekly as, “hypnotizing, multi-image surroundings reminiscent of, (if darker spirited and more narrative than) a ‘60s media-bath, including single-monitor and multimonitor video components and projections on wall and floor.” Other Work[edit] In addition to their collaborations, Bender and Funicelli have worked with other artists and in other media as well. Bender’s graphic work has been exhibited widely, including a solo show at the gallery Par Ci, Par La in Lyon, France. He has also collaborated as videographer and editor with artists Nancy Buchanan, Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, and Ulysses Jenkins, among many others. Funicelli has composed music for other video and performance artists, most notably Nancy Buchanan for whom he scored the performance Freedom Suites (1984) and the videotapes Sightlines, Mouthpiece, California Stories, The Work of Art in the Age of Electronic Reproduction, and Windows and Mirrors.
